Charlie Mayhew OBE
Charlie began his career with extensive travel. He went on to work in marine insurance before his long-standing connection to Africa led him to organise and lead a major UN-backed expedition across the continent in 1985, an experience that proved pivotal. In 1990, Charlie co-founded Tusk, which under his leadership grew into the UK’s leading African conservation NGO. To date, Tusk has raised more than £145 million to support over 250 local partner organisations and wildlife ranger units in more than 25 African countries, supporting conservation efforts across the continent. Charlie became Tusk’s full-time Chief Executive in 2002 and led the charity for more than two decades. He was awarded an MBE in 2005 and an OBE in 2023 for services to conservation.
