Jealous Mpofu

Jealous Mpofu, Senior Tracker at Painted Dog Conservation, was awarded the Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award in 2023. Jealous, joined PDC in March 1997 after many years working for Zimbabwe National Parks as a “rhino minder” where he spent his days wandering with his charge, “Chiwore”, a female black rhino, through the harsh wilderness of Matusadona National Park. He literally walked “Chiwore” around as one walks a well-trained domestic dog, sleeping when the rhino slept, guarding her against marauding lions and poachers. His job at PDC is arguably the most significant, as he heads the team that is tasked with keeping track of the various study packs of painted dogs. He drives out each day, confident in his acquired abilities with radio telemetry, his inherent bush skills and his intimate knowledge of the dog’s behaviour.
