Rahima Njaidi
Rahima is a lawyer and community conservation leader whose work has transformed forest governance and management across Tanzania. She began her career in 2004 supporting rural communities affected by mining and deforestation. Witnessing the social and environmental impacts of poor resource management inspired her long-term commitment to environmental justice and community empowerment. In 2007, Rahima founded MJUMITA, Tanzania’s only network dedicated to community-led forest conservation. She leads a movement spanning 503 villages, 132 community-based organizations, and over 15,000 members across 16 regions. She supports community stewardship of nearly two million hectares of forest, strengthening local rights to manage, protect, and benefit from forest resources for improved livelihoods of the local communities. Her leadership has earned international recognition, including the UNDP Equator Prize and the JHIDE Award. As a leading woman in conservation, Rahima inspires emerging female leaders and champions inclusive, rights-based solutions that benefit people, nature, and climate.
